...And A Little Child Shall Lead Them

Miss Lisa is in her teacher mode. Fifty kids are talking and milling around in the gym and it is her task to call them to order as our After School program begins. Slowly chaos moves toward order as she speaks quietly but firmly, getting the kids lined up in grade levels and seated at their tables.

As things settle down, Lisa senses a presence by her side. She turns a stern but kindly eye downward to see who this disobedient child might be. A little guy, a second grader is smiling up at her. “Say, this is really a nice place you have here!” he says, with all the confidence of a visiting politician. Then he moves away to take his place in line. Miss Lisa stifles a giggle and begins the program.

The little fellow’s spontaneous joy and approval is a pervasive attitude among the children in our program. Smiles and laughter are everywhere--at the tables during snacks, in the classrooms or at the computers. Fellowship House is a happy place. The young man is right--we really do have a nice place here!  What a contrast to the world outside our walls. There people are often grim and clearly troubled. There is camaraderie among the disadvantaged but it lacks the confident joy which the kids express when they are with us. Ultimately everyone is on the defensive, aware that desperate need can generate violence and injury.

At Fellowship House everyone is safe, trusting in the spirit of Christian love which surrounds every activity here. Children who anchor their lives in the message of hope they learn here have a chance for a better future. Faith in God and in His love made known in Jesus Christ is what makes all the difference.
