Club Peace
After-School Program
A holistic after-school program for students in first to fourth grades, Club Peace is a safe place where kids can learn about their strengths and weaknesses and how they are loved by Jesus Christ.
A Typical Day
-
Arrival
Students arrive between 3:00 and 3:20 p.m. Monday through Thursday. They are dropped off by family, walk, or are picked up at the bus stop on the corner of Broadway and Ferry by staff. We do not pick students up from school. -
Recreation Time
During the recreational time, each child's imagination develops as they are given space and time to play outdoors. Or, when weather turns inclement, they play games indoors.
Between each activity, the children line up with students in their grade and follow their assigned Street Leader to the next activity. Street Leaders are hired and trained high school students who assist staff in a classroom.
-
Snack Time
By the time most students get to club, its been a few hours since they ate their lunch and still a few hours until dinner. With their growing bodies hungry, we find it beneficial to provide a healthy snack for the students. Not only does it fill their stomachs, but also it helps them to better concentrate on their homework. -
Opening Program
Opening Program is a time for all the students to be together at once. It is a high-energy time when students in each grade work together to sing Bible songs, play crazy games, and learn more about the Bible theme for that week. -
Homework
The academic excellence of the students is important to the Fellowship House. We facilitate a space where the students can achieve their academic potential. Mondays through Wednesdays, volunteers tutor the students as they complete their homework.
Please Note: There is not always one-on-one tutoring. If a student does not have homework, or has completed it already, they are required to work on other academic work, such as worksheets, flashcards, or reading. It is important that students arrive at Club Peace with homework.
Activities:
- Games
On Mondays, students participate in group games. - Bible Club
Learning about the Bible is critical to the students' spiritual formations. They are taught right from wrong as they hear the stories in the Bible come to life on Tuesdays. The weekly topic and theme are reiterated throughout the week. Students sing songs, memorize verses, and remember the lessons. - Arts and Crafts
To foster the students' creative natures, weekly arts and crafts are organized for students on Wednesdays. - Computers
Each grade has access to the new computers every other week. When it is a student's day on the computer, he or she may use the Internet to play academic games, do research for a project or write a letter. Internet use is well monitored. Even the youngest are taught the basics of computer and Internet usage. - Dismissals
Students are dismissed and are either picked up by family, walked home by Street Leaders, or if they live a few blocks away, driven home in Fellowship House's van.
